The story about the origins of Kisseman is one of planting in good faith.
Bordered by Legon, Dome and Achimota, Kisseman is a small community which was founded in the very heart of the staff quarters of the Achimota School. The community is separated from its mother neighbourhood, AnummlƐ, only by a dividing wall.
In an interview, Peter Quarshigah, mechanic and founder of King P Motors, adjacent the Pure Fire Ministries at kisseiman, together with some residents of AnummlƐ, revealed that “the retirement of Mr Kissie, a former staff of the Achimota school, led to the birth of Kisseiman.”
Mr kissei was a staff of the Achimota School and very influential in his network. When it was time to go on retirement, he managed to convince some of his friends and fellow retirees to join hands and build a small community for themselves on the opposite side of the school.
This, they said, was to “ensure that they don’t lose the bond they had established over the years while they worked at the school.”
Having succeeded in convincing his colleagues, and thus, having built the community, Mr Kissei automatically became the overlord of the place and named it Kisseiman (City of Kissei) after himself.
“Although it was still within the vast Achimota school compound, the original place these retirees migrated from came to be known as “AnummlƐ”, which is Ga for ‘We hear a bell,'” they disclosed.
The reason behind the name AnummlƐ is that an old giant church bell rang in the school in the late-1940s to announce the arrival of the only bus that was said to ply the Achimota-Accra road.
Thus, one had to listen, always, for the giant church bell, if they needed to travel to Accra, as missing the bell meant missing the opportunity board the bus.
